They usually range from 130 to 190 millimeters and weigh around 90 to 220 grams. The lowland streaked tenrec is usually identified by its yellow stripes and scattered quills. Spikes or quills have developed as a defense mechanism against predators. These little creatures are active during the day and at night, in which they feed on soft-bodied leaf litter invertebrates, mainly earthworms.
